Celebrate National Tree Week at Careys
Join us for a week of arboreal appreciation at Careys Secret Garden in celebration of National Tree Week from 25th November to 3rd December 2023.
Trees are amazing! But why . . . ?
Oxygen Production: Trees are the lungs of the Earth, producing oxygen through photosynthesis. They absorb carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, and release oxygen, essential for the survival of many species, including us humans!
Biodiversity Support: Trees provide habitats for countless species. From insects to birds, mammals to fungi, trees foster biodiversity, creating ecosystems that are essential for the overall health of the planet. They even communicate with each other under our feet through something called ‘The Wood Wide Web!’.
Climate Regulation: Trees play a crucial role in regulating climate by absorbing and storing carbon dioxide. They act as carbon sinks, helping to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Soil Health: The roots of trees help prevent soil erosion, and the fallen leaves contribute to nutrient-rich soil, promoting healthy ecosystems.
Water Management: Trees play a key role in the water cycle. They absorb water through their roots, release it through transpiration, and help prevent flooding by slowing down and absorbing rainwater.
Natural Beauty: Trees contribute to the beauty of landscapes and have cultural significance. They inspire art, literature, and are often cherished elements of our natural surroundings.
Economic Importance: Trees provide resources such as timber, fruits, nuts, and medicinal products, contributing significantly to various industries and economies.
Health Benefits: Exposure to trees and green spaces has been linked to numerous health benefits, including reduced stress, improved mood, and enhanced overall well-being.
Renewable Resource: Trees are a renewable resource when managed sustainably. They can be harvested for various purposes without depleting the resource if responsible forestry practices are employed.
Longevity: Some trees have incredible lifespans, spanning hundreds or even thousands of years. They witness and contribute to the history of the areas they inhabit. Have you seen the Ancient Oak in the Secret Garden at Careys? It’s estimated to be 300 years old!
In summary, trees are really amazing! Their importance cannot be overstated, and that’s why we’re having a whole week of events dedicated to their awesomeness!

Why do we need to clear Rhododendron?
Rhododendron clearance is crucial for various reasons, primarily to mitigate the ecological impact of invasive rhododendron species. Rhododendrons, particularly non-native varieties, can quickly become invasive and outcompete native vegetation.
Their dense growth can lead to the formation of impenetrable thickets, disrupting natural ecosystems and reducing biodiversity. These invasive plants often release toxins into the soil, further inhibiting the growth of native plants.
Rhododendron clearance efforts are essential to restore and protect native habitats, allowing indigenous flora and fauna to thrive. Therefore, managing and clearing rhododendron populations is a vital conservation practice to preserve the balance and health of ecosystems.
Thank you in advance for your time and support.
