Cistus ladanifer, native to Spain and Portugal, the gum citrus us a medium sized evergreen shrub with lanceolate dark green aromatic leaves. The flowers which are produced singly at the tips of side shoots are typically 6-8cm in diameter with papery white petals with a reddish spot at the base making them a magnet for pollinators. The entire plant is covered with the sticky exudate of fragrant resin, the source of Labdanum used in perfumes.
