What is a Food Forest?
A food forest is a sustainable, self-sufficient gardening system designed to mimic a natural forest but with a focus on producing food and other useful plants for people and wildlife.
It uses layers of plants—just like a forest—including trees (fruit, nut, or timber), shrubs (berries), herbs, ground cover, vines, and even root crops, all working together in harmony. Each layer plays a role, whether it’s providing food, improving soil health, attracting pollinators, or offering shade and support to other plants.
The goal is to create a low-maintenance, biodiverse ecosystem that produces food year after year while regenerating the environment. It’s a beautiful way to combine permaculture principles with sustainability—perfect for anyone looking to grow more while doing less!
